5 Signs Your Furnace Is Ready for Replacement

Strange smells, rising bills, and uneven heat are often the first signs a furnace is on its way out. Here is how to tell the difference between a quick fix and a system at end of life.

1. Your Furnace Is Over 15 Years Old

Most residential furnaces last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. If yours is approaching that window and the repair list keeps growing, replacement usually wins on total cost of ownership.

2. Bills Keep Climbing

An older furnace running at 70% efficiency burns roughly 30% more gas than a modern 95%+ unit doing the same work. A single heating season often shows the difference.

3. You Hear Unusual Sounds

Banging, popping, rattling, or screeching during ignition or operation are not normal. They typically signal a failing inducer motor, cracked heat exchanger, or loose internal components.

4. Some Rooms Are Always Cold

Uneven heat usually means the furnace cannot move air evenly anymore or it was undersized for the home from day one. Worth a free assessment either way.

5. Frequent Repairs and Cycling

If you have called twice in one heating season or the furnace short-cycles every few minutes, the system is fighting itself. Replacement parts on a 20-year-old unit also get harder to source each year.
